Student Assistant - Student Asst 2

PHYSICAL WORK LOCATION: On Campus
 
Description:
General student position in evolutionary ecology. Conduct routine biological analyses of plant materials under general supervision for projects in vernal pool and Sierran ecology and conservation. Under general supervision, hike to remote locations, rarely for two to three days consecutively, to collect plants. Operate hand-held GPS units.
Keep detailed and organized metadata/field notes and follow standardized data collection procedures. Enter data into databases. Effectively communicate and professionally interact with lab and field crew members. Endure sometimes long hours processing soil and plant specimens from field or grown in greenhouses. Complete basic laboratory molecular protocols, such as DNA extractions, PCR, and genomic sequencing library preparation. Qualifications:
Currently enrolled sophomore, junior, or senior at UC Merced in the natural sciences; some prior experience in biological analyses or evidence of high aptitude and independence related to natural sciences desired. Ability to work independently, under general supervision, attention to detail, and strong organizational skills highly desired. Skills in molecular lab work (e.g., DNA extraction and PCR) highly desired. Prior field work experience or aptitude desired preferred.
