Student Lab Manager-Student Asst 4

General student lab management position in evolutionary ecology. The student will gain broad experience in managing a modern lab. Position is hosted in the Sexton Lab at UC Merced: http://sextonlab.ucmerced.edu/. The undergrad. manager will supervise undergraduates in the lab when necessary. Effectively communicate and professionally interact with lab and field crew members. Keep detailed and organized metadata/field notes and follow standardized data collection procedures. Enter data into databases. Maintain seed/germplasm stocks, databases, chemical stocks (including assisting with lab safety assessments), purchase supplies and equipment, assist with computer maintenance, and generally maintain lab equipment.

Conduct routine biological analyses and data collection from plant materials under general supervision for projects, typically in vernal pool and Sierra Nevadan ecosystems. Assist with data analysis, descriptions, and some writing, including record keeping. Under general supervision, occasionally travel or hike to remote locations, very rarely for two to three days consecutively, to collect plants or maintain field experiments. Endure sometimes long hours processing soil and plant specimens from field or grown in greenhouses. Complete basic laboratory molecular protocols, such as DNA extractions, PCR, and genomic sequencing library preparation when needed and under supervision. Training will be provided where necessary. 

 

 Currently enrolled sophomore, junior, or senior at UC Merced in the natural sciences. Some prior experience in biological analyses or evidence of high aptitude and independence related to natural sciences is desired. Ability to work independently, under general supervision, attention to detail, and strong organizational skills are highly desired. Skills in molecular lab work (e.g., DNA extraction and PCR) are highly desired. Prior field work experience, aptitude, and/or willingness to conduct field work is preferred.
